Science & Math Investigative Learning Experiences (SMILE)
SMILE stands for Science Math Investigative Learning Experiences. It is an afterschool program geared towards students who are excited about science and technology and who have been recommended by a teacher because they have shown they are responsible, respectful and safe! It is funded partially through the school district and Oregon State University. Students have weekly meetings with their SMILE club as well as special field trips and participation in events like the Maker Fair and STEM festival. It is a pre-college program that allows students to explore STEM as a future career and can even lead to scholarships down the road. It is offered to students from grades 4-12 in Woodburn. The hands-on science activities are provided through OSU as well as quality teacher training in STEM for educators who teach the SMILE clubs. Students learn how to problem solve through hands-on experimentation, engineering skills, computer coding, and they learn some useful math skills along the way!
